Summary report on the research study and prediction for Kenzo Fall/Winter 09

Summary report on the research study and prediction for Kenzo Fall/Winter 09

Introduction
The project is divided into 2 parts. The first part is a group research study which requires us to apply color theories to study, analyze a selected fashion brand. Kenzo is the brand we have studied. Each group member is responsible for 1 year fashion collection. And I am responsible for the 2006 Kenzo Spring/ Smmer and Fall/Winter.
The second part is individual work which is to design a fall winter collection for this brand. We need to forecast the color trend and make out the designs.

Part 1-Group research

Our group analyzes 6 years of Kenzo collections in total. In order to studying the 06 Kenzo collection, I find the collection photo in style.com. I recorded 4 points in each outfit. They are:
1. which colors are the garment used
2. the proportion of the color

3. color scheme are used

4. Hue, value, Chroma

Then I find out some colors, color scheme and theory are use frequently. I also realize which colors are the main colors in that collection. For the 06 Kenzo S/S collection, dark blue, red and white colors are the main colors. We can easy to image that these 3 colors are related to sea, sailing and sailor. And the theme of the collection is nautical. For the 06 Kenzo F/W collection, green, blue, red, black and white are the main colors. The designer applied different color scheme such as achromatic, mono-chromatic, double split complementary, single split complementary and analogous. For details, it can be found in this blog.

Summary of Kenzo 6 years’ collections
Since Antonio Marras to be the designer of KENZO, he still retains the concept of flowers and flourishing color in KENZO collections. In 04~09 collection, I find that the inspiration mainly comes from natural world, exoticism and national culture.

After the group research, I find that some colors are always used in KENZO collections. They are red, black, white, blue and green colors. Red is the cooperate color of KENZO. When we see the red color, it is linked to the brand of KENZO immediately.

Black and white are always used in KENZO collection even in spring/summer or fall/winter. In fashion industry, Black and white colors are never to be past tense.

Blue and green are always used in KENZO collections especially in fall/winter. As I know, Kenzo Takada (高田賢三 Takada Kenzō)is a Japanese fashion designer. He is also the founder of a world-wide brand KENZO. He loves nature. His inspiration always comes from natural world. Blue and green are the natural colors and it represents sky, sea and plants.

Part 2 – individual work (Forecasting KENZO 09 F/W collection)

My theme is bride-to-be. As I have mentioned before, Kenzo always gain the inspiration from national culture. He loves those cultures full of exoticism. In my mind, India culture is full of color. After researching of India culture, I find an interesting topic-marriage in India. In their culture, female is treated in an unfair way. There are privileges of certain groups, especially the men. It is similar to ancient China. But In India, Generally all expenses of wedding are to be borne by the girl's side. So some ladies may not marry to the boys because of limited money. For India ladies, it is really happy for them to become bride-to-be. On the other hand, they may not married because of improverishment. In my collection, you will find happiness and a bit piteous feeling.(expressed by warm color but in low value)

The main colors are red, orange, black and white. The supplementary colors are blue and yellow colors. I avoid using those colors which have been used in 08 F/W collection except Black, White and Red (these colors almost used in every collection.)

In my research for the India culture, I find that red is necessary in India marriage. Red means Simplicity, Purity and Candor in their culture. We can see that their bridal veil is in red color. So it is the reason why I choose red to be the main color in this collection. Orange is often used in the India garments. When I see this color, I feel happy and exoticism. Orange can be linked to India. It is an Aggressive (Warm) Colors. It gives enthusiasm feeling.

The theme broad explains my theme bride-to-be as well as the color I use in the collection. According to the color theme broad, I try to match the color in 6 outfits. I make use of the software Adobe illustrator to do the experiment and it can save time and do the work efficiently.

Color Definition
1. Primary Colors: red (different value and chroma) and bright yellow
2. Secondary Colors: light orange
3. Tertiary (Intermediate) Colors: red-orange and blue-green
4. Achromatic color: black and white

Color Matching of 09 Kenzo Fall/Winter collection

The first outfit (start with left hand side) is used achromatic Scheme. In my research, I find that amount of garments have used this color scheme in each collection. This outfit is to be the representative of garment with achromatic. The white line is to emphasis pattern of the cloth because I think it is the most interesting detail of the whole garment.

Color proportion

Black: 95% (main color in this garment)

White:5%

Emphasis point: line of the clothes~ pattern and the sewing line

The second outfit is used analogous scheme which is used red, red-orange and yellow white color. The main color of the garment is red-orange. So the proportion of red-orange is the large one. I add a large proportion of white because I discover that white make the main color more bright and eye-catching. And the red and yellow colors are next to the red-orange in color wheel. We can see the colors harmonize because of the Principle of Resemblance.

Color proportion (percentage)

red-orange: 60%

red: 15%

yellow: 5%

white: 20%
Emphasis point: the bag and the top part of the garment

The third outfit is used the principle of Contrast of color. The main colors are blue-green with white color. I use the bright yellow for highlighting the edge of the garment because it is the detail of design and I want people to look it first.

Color proportion (percentage)
blue-green: 35%

White:60%

yellow:5%

Emphasis point: edge of the top and the bottom parts

The forth outfit is used Mono-chromatic scheme. It is in red with different value and chroma. We can see that the dark red is outstanding first. The color matching looks harmorious because of the Principle of Resemblance.

Color proportion (percentage)

red with low value:15%

red with high value:80%

black: 5%

Emphasis point: edge of the garment and neck part

The fifth outfit is used contrast scheme. In Kenzo collection, flower print cannot be excluded. It is the main design point. In order to emphasis the flower, i use red (the corporate color) on it. And the total of the design look like japanese traditional garment Kimono. I find that some garments show the japan culture in each season. So it is the reason behind of this design.

Color proportion (percentage)

blue-green:80%

black:5%

red:15%

Emphasis point: flower print and japan style

The last outfit is used analogous Color Scheme. I use the red color in the middle part because the red color represents Kenzo and my theme. Maybe you will feel straight on it. For me, it looks pleasure to my eyes. It shows elegant and noble.

Color proportion (percentage)

Black: 80%

White:5%

red with low value: 15%

Emphasis point: multi-layer of the dress

Conclusion
I learn a lot in this project. I think it is an interesting task for me. Color is not easy to study but actually it is quite interesting.

India -- The Color Red: Simplicity, Purity and Candor

Written by Kate Smith
Symbolism, psychology and meaning of the colour red in India
The color of love, seduction and power, red has been symbolic in many a culture. A dynamism innately aligned with the color has been interpreted and followed across the globe. The devilish connotations of red in the west are amusingly juxtaposed by the traditional bearings of red in the east. The color red has played an instrumental role in Hindu customs and beliefs, perhaps the most ceremonious one being in the life of a married woman.A girl’s arrival into her role as the married woman is symbolized by the almost red henna on her hands and is sealed with the pinch of red powder sindoor on her head.Matrimonial bliss and a promise of togetherness are all sealed by the warmth and binding power of the red drape and red accessories. The bride’s first step into her new home is characterized by the ritual of her having to dip her feet in red water and walk bare feet on the floor of the house to symbolize the beginning of her new role.Cinema in India reflects this home grown custom of Indian brides bedecked in red bangles and saris, and the ceremonial kiosk showered with red roses. It’s almost the most powerful symbol of leaving behind one’s adolescence and stepping into womanhood and, eventually, motherhood. The red vermillion is also used as a ritual mark while greeting guests or family members at a festSymbolism, psychology and meaning of the colour red in Indiaival or simply into your home. The red tilak while sometimes used as a symbol of ‘blessing’ from an elderly to a youngster is also used in many customary functions. The customs include traditional Indian festivals such as Raksha Bandhan (the festival that celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters) and Durga Puja. The tilak, in theory, has to do with the third eye of Lord Shiva, the destroyer, one of the most revered Indian gods and part of the Trinity. The third eye is in tandem with Lord Shiva’s third eye opening to beckon the end of the world. However its customary significance is that of the all-seeing, all-pervading power that protects the inner wisdom of those that it’s applied on.The red tilak is replaced by a tiny red dot on the foreheads of married women who place this ‘bindi’ between the brows to symbolize spirituality. The bindi in particular is a symbol of feminine energy and supposed to protect both the wife and the husband. Although bindis have gone far from the traditional red circle, tradition and customs keep it alive at many places. It is also a part of Indian custom to tie a long red string around the wrist of loved ones during prayer as a mark of protection and to safeguard against the evil eye. Individuals wear it for a month till the thread wears off.Red in mythology denotes bravery, protection Symbolism, psychology and meaning of the colour red in Indiaand strength. Red powder is often showered on deities at temples during prayer. The colored powder therefore has become a hugely intrinsic part of Indian culture.Indian customs and culture are often described as riots of colors with almost every desirable color thrown in for good measure. But red truly remains the core symbol of power and spirituality, of protection and commitment. It is a color that has not faded the trials of time and stands alone as the most powerful. The sexual denotations of the red in the West are replaced by the simplicity, purity and ritualistic candor of the color in the east. The dynamism of red has always led it to command power and awe. It’s interesting however to see how different cultures utilized the color in their daily lives.Red in India is considered holy and is symbolic of a certain time, place and action in one's personal life. While castes, beliefs and rituals may differ across religious sects in India, the overall implications of the color are universal.Continue exploring my series 'The Colors of India'

exploring and forecasting KENZO 09 fall/winter collection (part 2)- Kenzo 09 collection theme and main color

Forecasting KENZO 09 F/W collection

-Theme: bride-to-be
Kenzo always gain the inspiration from national culture. He loves those cultures full of exoticism. In my mind, India culture is full of color. After researching of India culture, I get something very interesting but I feel piteous for the Indian women at the same time. In their culture, female is treated in an unfair way. There are privileges of certain groups, especially the men. It is similar to ancient China. But In India, Generally all expenses of wedding are to be borne by the girl's side. So some ladies may not marry to the boys because of limited money. For India ladies, to–be-bride may signify that they become adults. I think bride-to-be is really happy for them. So the feeling of happiness and enthusiasm are shown in my collection.

-Main Color (pantone)
Main color: red, orange, black, white
Supplementary color: blue and green colors

Why is red?

We can see that red is necessary in India marriage. Red means Simplicity, Purity and Candor in their culture. We can see that their bridal veil is in red color.
According to Wikipedia, Chestnut, also known as Indian red, is a medium brownish shade of red. When the color is called Indian red, it is named after the red laterite soil found in India. It is thus an earth tone as well as a red. It is composed of naturally occurring iron oxides. Other shades of iron oxides include Venetian Red and English Red.

Why is orange?
Orange is often used in the India garments. When I see this color, I feel happy and exoticism. Orange can be linked to India. It is an Aggressive (Warm) Colors. It gives enthusiasm feeling.

exploring and forecasting KENZO 09 fall/winter collection (part1)
My findings and study:

2.color

After the group research, I find that some colors are always used in KENZO collections. They are red, black, white, blue and green colors.
Why is red?
Red is the cooperate color of KENZO. When we see the red color, it is linked to the brand of KENZO immediately. In KENZO collection, it is not only the same "red" in all collections. Different value and chroma arranged in each collection. Most of the red is used in a small proportion in a garment (>30%) . Red gives an" expansive" effect on the senses and being capable of including a state of excitation in both emotion and motor behavior(from Kust Goldstein research).

Logo: red, boldface, English large-characters KENZO

Why are black and white?
Black and white are always used in KENZO collection even in spring/summer or fall/winter.
According to Wikipedia, Black-and-white is a number of monochrome forms in visual arts. Most forms of visual technology start out in black and white, and then slowly evolve into color as technology progresses. So it is hardly avoid using Black and white in our life, especially in fashion. In fashion industry, Black and white colors are never to be past tense. They are always the present continuous tense. They give simple, neat and cool feelings. I think Black and white colors are very amazing; it suits every time and situation even in simple or grand occasions. It may be the reasons the designer always apply Black and white in their collections.

Why are blue and green?

Blue and green are always used in KENZO collections especially in fall/winter. As I know, Kenzo Takada (高田賢三 Takada Kenzō)is a Japanese fashion designer. He is also the founder of a world-wide brand KENZO. He loves nature. His inspiration always comes from natural world. Blue and green are the natural colors and it represents sky, sea and plants.

Compare Colors: Project Skin Colors

Compare Colors:
Project Skin Colors

One day, I went shopping with friend Johanna. We saw a pretty pale blue outerwear. When we tried it on in fitting room, it looks too dull for me but it looks fresh for my friend. Then we saw a pretty deep blue outerwear and we tried it on in fitting room again. This time, it looks nice for me but it looks old for my friend. I wonder why the same garment shows different feeling for different people. What happen of the garment? At that moment, I notice that our skin color affect the choice of color of clothes. The same color may match to you but it does not match to the others. Actually, there are many skin colors in the world. Skin colors are not limited to a single color in one nation. Although our skins are in yellow color, there are various yellow tones among Chinese.

It often sees the various skin colors in cosmetic product, especially in foundation.ColorStay® Makeup with SoftFlex® for Combination/Oily Skin

According to Wikipedia, Human skin color can range from almost black (due to very high concentrations of the dark brown pigment melanin) to nearly colorless (appearing reddish white due to the blood vessels under the skin) in different people. Skin color is determined by the amount and type of melanin, the pigment in the skin. Variation in skin color is largely due to genetics. As a general pattern people with ancestors from tropical regions (hence greater sunlight exposure) have darker skin than people with ancestors from subtropical regions. This is far from a hard and fast rule however, because many light skinned groups have managed to survive at the equator by way of social adaptation. The same can be said of dark skinned groups living at subtropical latitudes.

Experiment on color matching on skin colors

There are 4 people with different color skins. I am trying to match different colors on them and select the best 5 colors respectively.

The people who have a bit green color skin are suitable to wear the garment in pure color such as green, blue and black.

The people who have health/honey brown color skin are suitable to wear the garment in bright or deep color such as orange and olive green.

The people who have a bit red/pink color skin are suitable to wear the garment in light grayish color such as light pink and light blue.

The people who have light/white color skin are more suitable to wear the garment in light/pale color such as light green and pale brown.

When people select "appropriate" color on their clothings or cosmetics, the coordination of the color become harmony. It will make them more charming and attractive.

After the interviews among my friends, I find that most of boys prefer blue color and girls prefer more colors. Their favorite colors are not always used in their clothing. They said although the color is of my liking, it is not match to me. I cannot wear well of garment in that color.

Actually, I don't think so. People can wear well of garment in their favorite color. It is because there are many choices in our favorite colors. For example, I love purple. It can be light purple, dark purple, pale purple, bright purple and in different values and chroma. There should have one that can match with me.

Kenzo Fall 2006 Ready-to-Wear

Taking Puccini¿s Turandot as inspiration, Kenzo¿s Antonio Marras sent out a fanciful collection of fall clothes that taken one by one had an insouciant charm. But shown at great length and often layered, as they were, the effect became treacly. In that famous opera, the protagonist is a Chinese princess who thinks nothing of ordering the death of a suitor who can't solve her riddles; Marras could have used some of that ruthlessness when it came to editing his show.Pinafore dresses in embroidered silk, mohair knits of roses and peonies, wrap coats and frogging details seemed in keeping with the theme. Even a camouflage vest backed in hot pink could be said to reflect the wild side of Marras¿ muse. There was less explanation, though, for a double-layer pleated tartan skirt, or a plaid coat-dress.For the finale, a giant lantern at the back of the runway lit up and slid open to reveal the models arrayed on steps behind a blooming cherry tree. As they took one last lap, thousands of tiny petals exploded from overhead confetti machines—thank you, LVMH. Here at least, Marras stayed true to his operatic inspiration.

Kenzo by Antonio Marras Fall 2006: A Thing of Beauty, A Joy Forever
By Mari Davis
PARIS, Mar 4, 2006/ FW/ --- The invitation for the Kenzo show was a precursor of the catwalk preview. Shaped like a fan, with the label name Kenzo spelled out in the blades, it was precious, something to keep as a memento of things that are beautiful.
So, walking in at the Salle Le Notre of the Carrousel du Louvre, and being greeted by a gargantuan Chinese lantern as part of the stage set, it was logical to assume that the collection would make references to the Chinese culture.
That assumption was partly correct, because Antonio Marras?inspiration was Giacomo Puccini opera entitled 騻urandot,?a story about a Chinese princess who refused to marry. And like Puccini opera that was a masterpiece, the Kenzo Fall 2006 collection by Antonio Marras was a tour de force that married artistic rendition of very wearable and covetable garments.
Beginning with outerwear that was cut wide, it was obvious that this collection, though properly entitled Autumn 2006/ Winter 2007 defies the accepted classification of seasonal fashion.
Every piece will withstand the test of time, and will never get pass? hence even when it becomes intage Kenzo?it will still be as fresh as when it first came out.
Winter capes were tailored like parkas; the trench coats that were inspired by the Mandarin costume were quilted and floral embroidery added. Day jackets had soft, barely puffed sleeves, cinched at the waist with a big belt, again based on a Chinese costume, but this time instead of royalty, this one came from the peasants.
Collars were high, a retrofit of the Mandarin collar, but fit nicely with the double-breasted day jackets that showed the European influence in China. Trousers were slim, but relaxed fitting.
Like Princess Turandot whose wardrobe is legendary for its beauty, the Kenzo woman for Fall 2006 has been proposed a similar arsenal. From 鷔himmering velvet and enormous colorful coats to skirts with pleats, flares or flounces,?the Kenzo woman becomes a very likable candidate for the best-dressed list.
From floral to Prince-of-Wales prints, to stripes, checks and herringbones, the whole collection spoke volumes on regality and independence with a hidden romantic inside.
Assured of her femininity, the Kenzo woman can wear mannish clothing as seen in the pantsuit sets that referenced the European costumes during the time of Marco Polo when he traveled to China; decorated with Venetian lace, damask, silk, netting and figured wools, they emphasized the simmering sensuality of the Kenzo woman under these masculine garments.
And though daywear is very colorful, eveningwear takes somber tone in black and silvery white made very feminine with their taut bodices and foliage prints.

This outfit is part of the spring/summer 2006 ready-to-wear collection for KENZO. It draws its inspiration from French naval uniform, combined with some of fashion's most enduring nautical motifs. The distinctive pom-pom cap recalls those worn by French sailors as do the wide-legged trousers, which have stylized anchor buttons.

Kenzo Spring 2006 Ready-to-Wear

With cardboard waves, clouds, and seagulls as a backdrop and a boardwalk/runway elevated above acres of sand, Antonio Marras' spring Kenzo collection set off prettily from Brittany and docked in Provence. It wasn't all plain sailing, though, because along the way, there was an implausible stopover at Euro Disney, not to mention a quick tour of the children's nursery.Marras began then with a saucy nautical theme: Navy-and-white-striped clingy knits and tailored sailor suits came with matching berets. To finish, he sent out floor-length silhouettes: floral gowns with pink gingham accents, a crocheted suit, and a lacy pinafore dress that, topped with a straw hat, called to mind Little Bo Peep. Somewhere in the middle, a couple of polka-dot chiffon looks were accessorized with Minnie Mouse ears. After their exits, the models made their way onto a cardboard ship waiting in the wings. When the last one swaggered aboard, wearing a man's tuxedo that made one think of the ill-fated couple in Marguerite Duras' novel The Lover, the foghorn bleated, and the boat came into view. Then, while confetti blew sideways from a wind machine, the girls disembarked for a final lap around the boardwalk. It made for good theater, though Marras might do well to remember that modern women are less interested in costumes than well-designed clothes. He had plenty of the latter, but a little less eccentricity would have gone a long way.
