Color Matching

The first outfit (start with left hand side) is used analogic Color Scheme. They are blue and blue-green with white color.

The second outfit is used red and blue with white.
The third outfit is used Mono-chromatic scheme which is used red only with white color.
The forth outfit is also used Complimentary Colors. They are yellow and pastel violet.
The fifth outfit is also used analogic Color Scheme. They are blue, blue-green and pastel violet.

The last outfit is used analogic Color Scheme. They are blue, blue-green and yellow.

After this exercise, I find that color matching can result different effects. But it is quite boring by applying color only. So I try to make patterns in the collection. It makes much better effects comparing those collections without patterns.

exercise 3

5 levels of focus in studying cultural differences

1.Cultural Differences

A net friend said “when I was living in Italy, an Italian co-worker's mother took ill and went to hospital. I immediately started requesting donations from the team so that we could buy her mother flowers and a get well card. Shortly into the fund-raising campaign, another Italian teammate stopped me before I went to the florist. "In Italy," he said, "we never give an even number of flowers, and please do not buy Chrysanthemums as they are only given at funerals." Imagine if he had sent the poor lady a dozen Chrysanthemums! Cultural significance of color is also important to heed when communicating a message online. Here are some examples of how colors have different significance between just two cultures:

Colors obtain symbolism through cultural references in the culture you grew up in. Depending upon the culture, colors can have very different meanings and actually cause problems for your site. For example, in the East, white is the color of funerals while in the West white is the color of Weddings. If you were to design a Wedding site intended for an Asian audience and you used a lot of whites, you could be disturbing the people you're trying to reach.

Purple
· Thailand: Color of mourning (widows)
· Western: Royalty

White
· Japan: White carnation symbolizes death
· Eastern: Funerals
· Western: Brides, angels, good guys, hospitals, doctors, peace (white dove)

Black
· China: Color for young boys
· Western: Funerals, death, Halloween (with orange), bad guys, rebellion

2.Age Differences

After observation in the street, i find that younger children will tend to prefer brighter, more solid colors. The colors shows more active and engaging. But adults tend to prefer more subdued colors.

3.Class Differences

Working class people tend to prefer colors that you can name: like blue, red, green, etc.

While more highly educated classes tend to prefer colors that are more obscure: like taupe, azure, mauve, etc. These dull, greyish or black and white shades appear too business-like and formal.

4.Gender Differences

I find that women were more likely than men to have a favorite color. Women prefer soft colors and men prefer soild color. Men tend to prefer cooler colors (blues and greens) while women tend to prefer warmer colors (reds and oranges).

5.Trends

Colors also tend towards seasonality, in other words, the designs reflect the season they were built in: winter blacks, whites, and greys; spring greens and bright colors; summer yellows; fall browns and golds.

And we can see that Black and white are never out-dated .

class exercise- apply color in store

Color Definition
1. Primary Colors: bright Yellow, cream yellow, sky blue and blue.
2. Secondary Colors: violet with low chroma.
3. Achromatic color: blacks and whites.

The main color of the store is yellow. I think the most expensive product is shown on the table because an animal blanket is under the table. The function of the animal blanket is to emphasis on the products and catches the vision of customers. So I apply yellow in the animal blanket. And I apply those products in violet color on the table. This two contrasting colors is used complementary scheme. When placed next to each other, complements make each other appear brighter and eye-catching.

Wall is in cream yellow and display board is in brown color. These are analogic color. We can see that some products are shown quite far away. In order to attract people to walk there, red violet is used. It is adjacent complementary color matching with yellow, violet and red-violet. It makes the relationship between these three colors.

When the customers come in the store, the first thing can impress them is the color. They will go in front of those products which can attract their eye first.

It is why I arrange these colors in the store. I think the store give trendy feeling to the customer.

color scheme in Japanese clothing

As we know, Japanese use the colors very well. Many designers go to Japan to have "a look" in order to learn their designs and the colors they use. Hong Kong people always follow their trend and their dressing skill. Let's to see what color scheme do Japanese use.

mono-chromatic

analogous colour

achromatic colour

complimentary colours

split complements

Comparing with Hong Kong people, it seems that Japanese tend to attempt on color matching fearlessly. I always see people use Achromatic scheme on color matching in Hong Kong, especially black and white.

Although is a perfectly safe of the color matching on clothing, it is quite boring. Maybe we need more colors in our clothing. Mono-chromati is another good trying. And it is the perfectly safe color matching skill on clothing.

Burberry pattern analysis

The black, white, and red pattern known as the "Burberry classic check", and now a registered trademark, was widely used on its own for items including umbrellas, scarves, and luggage.

Color Definition
In this Burberry pattern, there are 4 colors which are red-orange, red, black and white.
1. Primary Colors: Red with low value.
2. Tertiary (Intermediate) Colors: red-orange with high value and low chroma (dark grayish).
3. Achromatic Colors: black and white

They are also aggressive (Warm) Colors in the Burberry classic check. And the colors seem to be added gray to the pure hue.

we can see that Mono-chromatic are used in the pattern which means make use of numerous shades (darker) and tints (lighter) of the red-orange and red hues.

Let's analysis another check pattern.

Color Definition
In this pattern, there are 4 colors which are red, yellow, blue and green.
1. Primary Colors: red, yellow, blue with low value and high chroma.
2. Tertiary (Intermediate) Colors: green with low value.

They are also Receding (Cool) Colors in the check. And the colors seem to be added black to the pure hue.we can see that the scheme of Triad are used in the pattern. Triad is diifficult to apply because it is easy to be ambiguity. Appropreiately controlling the propotion of colors is main point when using this scheme. And I think this check is a sucessful case. It uses Blue and green as the main colors and red and yellow as auxiliary colors.
